Greensborough League: Finals Series Review

Greensborough League: Finals Series Review

In our most compelling Greensborough Finals Series to date, numerous fixtures went down to the wire, with very little separating the top teams at the Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre.

WE WIN claimed the honours, crowned Div 1 Champions, following their incredible nine-game winning streak to qualify for the top four. Meanwhile, the Dodgem Ducks claimed their first Gold Medallions – doing it the hard way from eighth position – triumphing in three successive Finals matches to win the Div 2 title.

Week 1 Finals Series:

The opening week kicked-off with a bang. Five of the six fixtures were decided by three points or less – a clear indication of the competitive nature between the premiere teams in this competition.

Div 2:

The Div 2 Finals begun proceedings. It was the 5th vs. 6th tie – Trivia Newton John and The People’s Choice. With a double chance in their pocket, a win for either side would place them directly into the Grand Final.

In a close encounter, both teams had their chances. There was little separating the pair, although it was Trivia Newton John who prevailed by a whisker, narrowly winning 8 – 7.

The 7th vs. 8th meeting was a direct Elimination Final, which saw Not Just Your Average Joe’s take on the Dodgem Ducks.

Not Just Your Average Joe’s came out all  guns blazing, taking the ascendency early to hit the Ducks where it hurt – on the scoreboard! The Joe’s dominated the opening 20 minutes of the encounter, leading by three points with only half the match remaining.

The Ducks finally hit their straps, flying away with the game in a matter of minutes to eventually book their place in the Semi-Final, prevailing 9 – 6.

With no time to rest, the Dodgem Ducks were back on the court, locking horns with The People’s Choice, for  chance to book a Grand Final berth.

In almost a carbon copy of their previous game, the Ducks got off to another slow start, surrendering the advantage to their opposition. However, once again the Ducks dug deep, and managed to get over the line, recording a 7 – 4 victory.

Div 1:

The match of the evening saw the top-two teams battle it out in the opening game of the Div 1 Finals Series.

Minor Premiers, TFR hosted Gazz Razz in the Quarter-Final – the double chance fixture. Little separated the top two teams, as evidenced during the regular season -the pair having one win each against their names in previous meetings.

In a low scoring, intense affair, TFR lead 4 – 3 with one-round remaining. It appeared as though TFR had almost done enough to win through to the Grand Final. In a tense final round, Gazz Razz eliminated five of the six opposition’s players – with only Dillion Hutson remaining. Following a gallant effort, Dillion was eventually eliminated, forcing the game into Overtime at 4 – 4.

Gazz Razz won in Overtime to send their team and packed out room into ecstasy – Dodgeball at its finest!

The next match saw the in-form WE WIN makes its debut in the Finals Series, taking on Pirates in an Elimination Final.

WE WIN, lead by Major League Dodgeball’s own Australian player Ryan Mclaughlin, had way too much firepower in the tank, dominating the match to take it out 14 – 0.

After TFR’s heartbreaking loss, they had an opportunity for redemption, facing WE WIN for a place in the season’s finale.

It was never going to be easy, but TFR illustrated why they won the Minor Premiership, with a brilliant back to the walls display, taking a 5 – 4 lead in the back-half of the fixture. With a big crowd watching from the sidelines, it was a  clear do or die contest for these teams.

While TFR lead with minutes remaining, it wasn’t meant to be. WE WIN won the final three rounds, to ultimately take out the contest, and seal their spot in the Div 1 Grand Final.

Week 2 Finals Series:

Div 2:

The Play-Off for Third tie saw Not Just Your Average Joe’s take on The People’s Choice. Both teams failed to win in the opening week of the Finals Series, with the The People’s unfortunately, for them, bowing out in straight sets, to extinguish their double chance.

The opening half was close, with little splitting the teams. Unlike last season in the corresponding fixture, Not Just Your Average Joe’s were able to make amends, to seal the Div 1 Bronze medal – prevailing 8 – 3.

Without doubt, the match of the evening took place in the Div 2 Grand Final, between Trivia Newton John and Dodgem Ducks – the first of our two matches filmed at the venue.

Their only previous meeting was in Round 15, where Trivia Newton John walked away with the honours, winning 10 – 7, in a contest which could have very well gone either way.

An exciting, attacking brand of Dodgeball was on show, with two teams evidently giving it their all. Neither team had any great advantage during the match. The biggest lead at any stage was a mere two points – demonstrating how close and intense it was throughout the 40 minutes.

Each round was literally nail-biting stuff, with either a hit or  superb catch sealing the team’s fate. The Ducks, who trailed 5 – 3, waddled their way back into the match, securing the next four rounds to take a 7 – 5 lead. It almost looked as though they had done enough to seal the win. However, Trivia Newton John managed to claw their way back into the contest, to level the scores with only one-round left to play.

It was all or nothing at this stage. In the most exciting round of the match, the momentum continually shifted between the sides – both teams catching important balls to turn the tide around in their favour. The Ducks eventually got Trivia down to one player remaining, their captain Jon Hyatt.

Jon did all he could to save his team – dodge, ducking and jumping mid-air. But there was little Jon could do to avoid elimination, when Ducks’ Nathan Kegele threw a thunderbolt into his leg, gifting Dodgem Ducks a hard-fought 8 – 7 victory, and subsequently sealing the Div 2 Championship.

Div 1:

The Minor Premiers, TFR went into the Play-Off for Third game, following their two narrow defeats in the Quarter and Semi-Final matches. They were due to play Pirates in this tie, however were awarded the 10 – 0 win, due to the Pirates unfortunately having to forfeit at late notice.

A Bronze Medal in Div 1 was the least TFR deserved, after finishing off the regular season 14 – 2, and setting some records in the process.

042

The Div 1 Grand Final, the second of our filmed matches, served up another fascinating contest, between two great Dodgeball teams – Gazz Razz and WE WIN.

WE WIN, who stormed their way into the top four – Steven Bradbury style – were full of optimism, following their unbeaten streak of nine matches during the regular season, and winning their two Finals fixtures in Week One.

Gazz Razz were also high on confidence, following their heroic 5 – 4 victory over Minor Premiers, TFR, the previous week.

Both teams, featuring some of the best players in the competition, were at each other from the get go. WE WIN held an early 2 – 1 lead, and continued to ply the pressure of their opponents. WE WIN managed to get to a healthy 5 – 2 lead, however the Razz clawed their way back into the game, getting within one-point to draw the scores at 5 – 4.

From here, each round was extremely close, with very little separating the two outfits. A potent throw or brilliant catch would often divide the teams each round.

Ultimately, WE WIN had too many weapons at their disposal, taking out the match 9 – 5, and sealing the Div 1 Championship in the process.
