The Greensborough All Stars proved to be the dominant force in the second-edition of Major League Dodgeball’s All Stars Cup, winning the crown for the first time in the tournament’s short history, on Friday, August 29.
The event was staged at Bulleen Basketball Stadium, with Greensborough ultimately prevailing in Overtime, to defeat local rivals Bundoora 4 – 3, in a pulsating Grand Final.
In the biggest line-up of All Star teams, five MLD representative leagues featured on this occasion, including – Bulleen, Bundoora, Footscray, Greensborough and Vermont South.
Following two All Stars Events, it now leaves Greensborough and Vermont South level with one title a piece.
Vermont South, featuring Australian dodgeballers Craig Payne and Lauren Mclean, had their moments throughout the tournament, but merely fell short of qualifying for the finale, finishing in third position and one-point off a Grand Final berth.
Greensborough, lead by Australian player Ryan Mclaughlin, proved to be the team to beat in this event, sweeping past all its opponents in comprehensive fashion during the group stages. The Greensborough side was faultless, triumphing in all four of its group matches, while encompassing a commanding +23 Points Differential.
Depsite Greensborough’s dominance, it was dealt a much tougher contest than many had anticipated in the Grand Final. Following its 7 – 2 trouncing of Bundoora in the group phase, Greensborough was expected to again repeat a similar scoreline.
The Bundoora side stepped it up a notch, with some amazing catching from several of its players, notably by Brodie ‘Buckets’ Purtle, who caught anything and everything in his direction.
With so much on the line and intensity building, Bundoora leveled the scores at 3 – 3, to send the contest into Overtime, and the room into raptures.
With an upset on the cards, Greensborough had too much firepower when it mattered most. Scorgasms’ Jonny Hyatt delivered the final blow, throwing down a thunderbolt at Jayden Watson’s leg, to seal the victory and title for Greensborough.
All five representative leagues throughout the tournament proved their worth, with every team obtaining at least one win from its four group matches. The talent on display was on another level to your average Dodgeball competition.
Well done to all our All Star players on a fantastic, fun and entertaining tournament. We look forward to hosting our annual MLD All Stars event just prior to the Christmas break, on Sunday, December 21, which will also include the expansion league, the Hawthorn All Stars.
